In an effort to cut costs across Florida, all varsity sports except football face a 20 percent reduction in the number of regular-season games teams will be allowed to play. The proposal will be taken up Monday by the state's athletic association in Gainesville.
If it passes, sports such as basketball, baseball and softball at public and private schools could see their schedules shrink from 25 to 20 games. The move by the Florida High School Athletic Association is designed to help school districts save money and level the playing field.
Even if the proposal does not pass at the state level, expect Broward County to implement its own reductions. The county plan is a compromise that is intended to save about $380,000 and four sports that were initially on the chopping block: water polo, boys' volleyball, tennis and golf.
In Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, officials don't foresee sports cuts at this time.
FHSAA executive director Roger Dearing said he is hopeful that passing the plan, scheduled to be voted on Monday in Gainesville, will help save entire sports programs and bring uniformity across the state's 67 counties.
